Elbow, wrist and hand problems

The elbow is the joint between your upper arm (humerus), ulna (ulna) and radius bone (radius). The main movement in your elbow is flexion and extension. Your radius and ulna rotate around each other and allow you to rotate your forearm. They call this supination and pronation.
The wrist is the joint between your forearm and hand. Your wrist can bend, extend, and move sideways (ulnar and radial deviation).
Your hand consists of 27 bones; 8 carpal bones, 5 metacarpals and 14 phalanges. There are joints between these bones, which makes the hand very mobile.
There are a lot of muscles in the elbow, forearm and hand, about 30. Between these muscles run the nerves that innervate your hand.
So you can imagine that a lot can go wrong.
Elbow and forearm problems
Common elbow complaints are: mouse arm, tennis elbow (epicondylitis lateralis) and golfers elbow (epicondylitis medialis). Nowadays these complaints are called KANS, complaints of the arm, neck and shoulder. Most of these complaints are caused by repetitive movements of the elbow and hand with too little rest and relaxation. The muscles that extend and flex your fingers start in your elbow and forearm. Often these muscles don’t get enough time and rest to recover from the continuous repetitive movements during the day. This will overload them and make them hurt.
Important in this is the “too little rest” part. Even small 10 second breaks in which you shake your hands and wrists can be enough to prevent complaints.
Especially with chronic issues on the forearm and elbow, there is an underlying nerve compression. This nerve compression can be in the elbow, but also in the neck, shoulder or wrist. Treating and resolving these nerve entrapments often provides great relief.
Wrist and hand problems
The human hand and wrist consist of many bones, joints, muscles and tendons. Because we use our hands all day long, complaints are common. Wrist and hand complaints can have a major impact on your daily life.
A distinction can be made between acute and chronic hand and wrist complaints.
Acute complaints suddenly arise after a fall or during sports. Even if you do too many exercises like push ups, your wrist can start to hurt. These complaints often go away with dosed movement and time.
Long-term and chronic hand and wrist complaints often start without an obvious cause and gradually get worse over time. These complaints are often caused by too much repetitive movement during work with too little rest and a (too) high workload.
Examples of common (chronic) hand and wrist complaints are sleeping hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon sheath inflammation in the thumb (quervain syndrome). These conditions not only involve muscles and tendons, but also often nerve compression. This nerve compression is caused by too much tension in the muscles of the forearm, wrist and hand that pinch the nerve. With hand physiotherapy, these nerve pinches can often be resolved within a few sessions.
What is the best thing you can do if you have elbow, forearm, wrist and / or hand problems?
- Move your elbow, forearm, wrist, and / or hand in all directions, through their full painfree range of motion.
- Move the surrounding joints and areas through their full painfree range of motion. That means your neck, shoulder, upper back, elbow, forearm, wrist and / or hand.
- Relax! Take more breaks from the repetitive movement, shake your hands and wrists, You can also do breathing exercises or stretches for your forearm and wrist.
Especially if you have acute problems with your elbow, forearm, wrist and / or hand, it is about THAT you move instead of HOW you move. Moving within the pain threshold decreases pain and accelerates the recovery process. So get moving!
