Recovering from a concussion, concussion symptoms or whiplash in Amsterdam

Do you have symptoms after a concussion (concussion), or whiplash, for example after a car accident, sports incident, fall, or collision? And are your symptoms lasting longer than you expected?

At Art of Physio, we help you with an active, structured recovery pathway. The method we use is internationally recognised and scientifically supported. We start with an intake appointment in which we carry out a comprehensive concussion assessment: you get clarity on what’s going on, what your recovery prospects are, and which steps make sense now.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury caused by a sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head and brain (forward, backward, or sideways). This can happen during:

  • car accidents
  • whiplash-trauma
  • sports injuries
  • falls or blows to the head

You don’t have to have lost consciousness to have a concussion.

A mild concussion

Even with a mild concussion, you can experience clear symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms seem manageable at first, but later you still notice issues with stimuli, concentration, energy, or recovery.

Common symptoms after concussion or whiplash

Symptoms can vary from person to person.
Common symptoms include:

  • headache or a pressure-like sensation in the head
  • dizziness and nausea
  • neck pain and stiffness (often together with whiplash)
  • concentration and memory problems
  • fatigue and sensory overload
  • sensitivity to light or sound
  • stress, anxiety, or sleep problems

If symptoms persist longer than a few weeks, this is sometimes referred to as post-concussion complaints or post-commotional syndrome. In an international context, the term post-concussion syndrome is also used.

Concussion after car accident

A concussion after a car accident occurs regularly, and can be combined with whiplash. The impact often affects more than just your neck, such as:

  • balance (vestibular system)
  • visual processing and eye movements
  • stress regulation (autonomic nervous system)
  • overall load tolerance and recovery capacity

Rest alone is often not enough. The right progression, timing, and guidance make the difference.

Why an early concussion assessment helps

The sooner you map out which systems are involved, the sooner you can create a suitable plan. That’s why we perform a comprehensive concussion assessment during your intake.

What we assess during the intake (90 minutes)

During your intake, we systematically assess:

  • the nature and severity of the trauma
  • which systems are involved (neck, vestibular, visual, neurological)
  • your current load tolerance
  • expected recovery time and prognosis

We use targeted tests, observations, and (where appropriate) questionnaires. This provides direction and peace of mind: you know where you stand and what is sensible to do next.

After the intake, we discuss the treatment advice and (where appropriate) schedule follow-up sessions in a logical rhythm.

Concussion Fix Program at Art of Physio

After the intake, you can start the Concussion Fix Program: a structured 8-week recovery program tailored to your symptoms and goals. If symptoms persist, the plan can be adjusted or extended.

What do we work on?

  • neck function and whiplash-related symptoms
  • dizziness and balance (vestibular rehabilitation)
  • eye movements and visual processing
  • stress regulation and recovery (autonomic nervous system)
  • fitness, load tolerance, and confidence in movement

Goal: a safe return to work, sport, and daily function, with control over your recovery.

Our concussion team

The program is guided by our specialised concussion team: Stina and Nicolette. You receive personal guidance, clear steps, and measurable progress.

Discovery call

If you would appreciate a call, whether this program is a good fit for you, please schedule a free discovery call with one of our concussion specialists.

Who is this suitable for?

This pathway is a good fit if you:

  • have experienced a concussion or whiplash
  • have symptoms after a (car) accident, fall, or sports injury
  • are not recovered after weeks or months
  • notice that “rest and wait” is not helping
  • want to regain control over work, sport, and daily life

How does it work?

  • Book an intake and concussion assessment (90 min)
  • Your Investment in Intake + concussion assessment (90 min): €205
  • We discuss what is realistic and appropriate for your situation
  • we also look at how you may be able to get (part of) the costs reimbursed

Start on time, recover better

Don’t keep walking around with symptoms hoping they will go away on their own. A good analysis and a targeted approach make the difference.

Want to know where you stand and which steps make sense now? Book your intake: we perform a concussion assessment and you receive a clear plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need complete rest after a concussion?

Complete rest is usually not recommended for a prolonged period. In the early phase, relative rest can help, but after that, graded, safe activity is often important. What’s appropriate depends on your symptoms and load tolerance. During the intake we conduct an assessment and you will receive a plan that suits your situation.

How soon should I get a concussion assessment?

Preferably as soon as possible. Even if symptoms have been present for longer, an assessment can be useful to guide recovery and prevent further delay.

My symptoms have been present for a while. Can treatment still help?

Often yes. With long-lasting symptoms, recovery may take more time, but improvement is regularly possible with a targeted approach.

Can I work or study during the program?

In many cases yes, sometimes with adjustments. We discuss this during the intake.

Is this only for athletes?

No. We guide both athletes and non-athletes, including many people with symptoms after a car accident or other trauma.
